Alcoholics & Addicts Beware-Drug Alcohol Treatment is BIG BUSINESS

Today more than ever, alcohol and drug addiction treatment has become big business. 10 years ago most people who entered the treatment field were recovering alcoholics and addicts themselves. Their own lives had been so revolutionized by their own recovery, that they wanted to do nothing more than help other alcoholics and addicts recover too.

Individuals who own treatment centers (residential houses) that have no knowledge of addiction, also have no knowledge of how to run an addiction treatment center, or even select the appropriate staff to work for the addiction treatment center. How could they?

Usually these real estate investors think it is just about paying enough money to someone, and that all people have a price. They then find it it baffling when seasoned committed professionals in the recovery field will choose to not work with them, or join the "business" for any amount of money. As one of my favorite treatment centers puts it, "you can't pay people to care".

Following are a few ways to determine if a drug rehab is big business, or big recovery:

1. The individual who owns the treatment center will not be listed on their web site staff page, and does not want any direct ties to the business. They will also use their wife's or other individuals credit card to pay for business expenses. Typically these are real estate moguls who see our industry as a great way to acquire real estate, and have the alcoholic or addict pay for it.

2. The treatment center has only been in business for a short time, less than 2 years.

3. If the center is less than 3 years in business, ask who owns the facility, and then talk to the owner themselves. Ask them what addiction they have overcome, and why they are in the filed of addiction treatment.

This is a great question to ask, because those who are in the field of recovery for the right reasons, will be more than happy to talk to you about this, unusually at length!

4. Length and tenure of staff. If the staff is constantly changing, this is a red flag. Remember, everything rolls down hill from the top. That is how the culture is developed in any business, especially drug alcohol rehab. (even if the top level is transparent or flying stealth)

If you are seriously considering going to an addiction treatment center, take some time to choose. It can make all the difference in your new beginning. We wish you well.

Yes, it's in the air! The spirit of Christmas once more warms this poor distraught world. Over the whole globe millions are looking forward to that one day when strife can be forgotten, when it will be remembered that all human beings, even the least are loved by God, when men will hope for the coming of the Prince of Peace as they never hoped before.

But there is another world which is not poor. Neither is it distraught.

It is the world of Alcoholics Anonymous, where thousands dwell happily and secure. Secure because each of us, in his own way, knows a greater power who is love, who is just, and who can be trusted.

Nor can men and women of AA ever forget that only through suffering did they find enough humility to enter the portals of that New World.

How privileged we are to understand so well the divine paradox that strength rises f rom weakness, that humiliation goes before resurrection; that pain is not only the price but the very touchstone of spiritual rebirth.

Knowing it's full worth and purpose, we can no longer fear adversity, we have found prosperity where there was poverty, peace and joy have sprung out of the very midst of chaos.

Staying out of negative thinking is paramount to an enjoyable sober life. It's easy to be negative, and most people in the world operate from a place of fear, survival and judgement. We are so lucky in recovery that we are given a new pair of glasses to see the world through.

Now that we have aligned ourselves with spirit, God whatever we call it is fine...a power greater than ourselves, we have lost that nagging anxiety that used to plague us. That former anxiety was a precursor to our desire to use drugs and/or drink alcohol.

Our sobriety comes first in our lives today. We have a solid plan for our recovery. It includes meetings, counseling, working with others, reading good uplifting material, prayer and meditation. It also includes exercise and eating well. Today we are giving to society as oppossed to always taking from it and finding fault in it. Depression is very often the precursor to substance abuse. Depression and substance abuse form a cycle. People who are depressed abuse drugs and alcohol to help alleviate their depression. People who abuse substances then become depressed by the damage they have inflicted on themselves, it is a cycle.

Using Opiates and Heroin to Cope with Depression

Opiates and Heroin are depressants (not stimulants). Their effect is not a simple suppression of feelings: it provides the user a type of "joy" in having their feelings suppressed. While on opiates, people can give anxiety and depression "the slip". Being high on opiates makes one feel like doing nothing, and that doing nothing in life is more than all right. People who have used Heroin and Opiates, and are managing to live drug free, or with methadone suffer tremendous and high rates of depression. Neurologists say that this is because of organic damage to the brain produced by the opiates.

When we feel unworthy, we suffer in life, and often times addiction results

How does one get to a place where they totally love and and accept themselves, unconditionally? That is the 10 zillion dollar question. If we could just get a 12 pack in 6 weeks, we would clearly be able to garner the love and admiration that we as human beings crave, and deserve.

Would we over eat, drink too much alcohol, spend money we don't have to buy things to impress people we don't know, or abuse drugs to get high if we felt ok in our own skin...probably not.

Many people have been seriously abused and neglected in childhood, and walk around with feelings of deep shame and unresolved trauma. This shame is often times the reason for addiction, we need something to feel better, and that behavior can take many forms. Some of the most spiritually broken people I have known and met, have the most money, and access to anything the world can offer to feel better. That is probably the most tragic, when one can have whatever they want, and nothing, absolutely nothing will really satisfy.

When we do not feel worthy or right, we and are driven to fix that, sometimes to the point of ending our own lives. However, if we do want to live a life that is relatively satisfying and happy, the pain can be the motivation to change and doing really good things in the world.

Most human beings do not change anything until it becomes painful enough. And some of us have very high thresh holds and tolerance to pain. Also, we need to honor and respect that every one has their own journey to travel while here, on this earth. If all the recovered alcoholics and addicts had not traveled their own roads of misery, and then salvation in sobriety, they would not have the stories of hope to now share and inspire others.

Charlie Sheen has his own journey to travel, however he deems fit. Our society loves to tear people apart when they are suffering, and it is comical to watch the so called "experts" make their assessments about him, when they are only trying to "self promote" (the latest addiction) in the process.

In any event, there is New Life in Recovery, only if that is what one wants, and only you will know that for yourself. The Buddha's final revelation was that he could see the beauty in all of life, the pain and the joy, and just experience it, that therein is the perfection.

Even the Bible says that God gave humans dominion over this world, and everything in it. The problem is that we truly believe that we are at the mercy and effect of outside forces acting on us. Very few people make the leap in understanding that the exact opposite is true.

How would advertising companies convince us to buy things we don't need, or really even want, if we only trusted our own instincts, and already knew without a doubt that we are perfect as we are. Why are we so concerned about conforming to what we "think" others want us to look like, act like and so on? Why do we feel victimized by the "theys" of the world?

Demi Moore & David Duchovny recently stared in "The Joneses" which really showed this concept in a contemporary light. Although not fond of the over used term, "at the end of the day", we all do these things because we do not know that we have the power within us, and in order to know this, it requires what is known as a "shift" in awareness.

If we want to lose 20 pounds, we must first see ourselves as a person who is slim and 20 lbs lighter, then we will eat and exercise as a slim person does. If we think that we will acquire the right love interest once we are 20 lbs lighter, we wont, because we don't love ourselves yet, as we are.

The reason we at www.newliferecovery.net/ think this is important, is because often times when we don't feel like we have enough, look good enough, have accomplished enough; or feel victimized by people, places and things that are beyond our influence or control---we will resort to alcohol and drug abuse to feel better and simply escape.

Alternatively on the other side of the spectrum, when we do accomplish great things, make lots of money and have the love and admiration of our peers, we can also self sabotage...why? If anything these people are the ones who show us most clearly that real happiness, peace and freedom are not found "out there".

The journey to enlightenment is progressively within. Whatever you think you need, trust me, it's not "out there", or "over there", it's in here-now. How does one get here? It is different for all of us, however it only takes a bit of willingness. If you are reading this, you are already further along the path than most!

Religion typically believes in two powers, duality - or good and evil. Two opposing forces which are always present. God is out there somewhere, and if I can just be “good enough” and “pray hard enough”, perhaps He will answer my prayers and make my life better. People love to argue about religion too, and it is the major cause of wars for as long as history has been documented. Hence, it does more to separate people, than bring them together.

Spirituality on the other hand unites people, as opposed to separating them. No hard core dogma, no ecclesiastic languaging, no authoritive personalities to quote based on ancient time periods. Spirit believes we are all connected to a source greater than ourselves. Some call it God, universal consciousness, or just spirit.

We cannot see electricity, but we experience the effects of it. Nor can we see integrity, honesty or love, but we are sure when they are absent or present. That is one of the amazing aspects of the 12 step programs which are not religious but spiritual.

Many people are not aware of the differences between religion and spirituality, heretofore believing the 12 step programs are "religious" and as a result understandably sceptical. Consider the man who year after year, has gone to jail, lost his home, his job and family, essentially all of his worldly good as a result of his drinking, and still cannot stop drinking. However, this same man goes to a 12 step meeting, his fellow man puts their arms around him, tells him they understand, and he never takes another drink for the remainder of his life. This is an example of spiritual healing.

Peace that surpasses understanding is a wonderful thing to live with. There is a knowing that regardless of circumstances in life, one has a real joy in just being alive. Interestingly, when one lives a spiritual life, and stops pursuing the things of the world, their circumstances tend to greatly improve anyway. Go figure?

Dual diagnosis is also used to describe a co-occurring condition in which a person is simultaneously diagnosed with an Axis I and an Axis II psychiatric disorder. While Axis I conditions are considered more or less amenable to treatments such as individual therapy and psychotropic drugs (e.g., antipsychotic, and antidepressant medications), Axis II conditions are typically considered more resistant or even refractory to such treatments.

Drug abuse, including alcohol and prescription drugs can induce symptomatology which resembles mental illness which can make it difficult to differentiate between substance induced psychiatric syndromes and pre-existing mental health problems. More often than not psychiatric disorders amongst drug or alcohol abusers disappear with prolonged abstinence.

Substance induced psychiatric symptoms can occur both in the intoxicated state and also during the withdrawal state. In some cases these substance induced psychiatric disorders can persist long after detoxification, such as prolonged psychosis or depression after amphetamine or cocaine abuse. Abuse of hallucinogens can trigger delusional and other psychotic phenomena long after cessation of use and cannabis may trigger panic attacks during intoxication and with use it may cause a state similar to dysthymia.

As we go through life, we expect full grown adults to act "mature", but what is maturity? Would we have the high incident of domestic violence and road rage if we were mature adults? When someone cuts us off on the freeway, do we immediately feel violated and have a strong urge to retaliate?

Anger is a problem in our society, even the world. Any time we are angry or frustrated in life, it is quite simply because we think that whatever is happening in our experience should not be. We think that if a person or situation would just be the way we think it should be, we would be happy, and everything would be better.

The illusion is that we think we can control people, places and things. And perhaps we can control some people, and some things for a period of time, but usually that is short lived.

The next time you have a disagreement with someone, or even a down right verbal fight, try to not respond, at all. The person who loses it, reacts, or has to have the last word is the immature infantile adult in the exchange. Notice how the negativity makes your feel in your body. For alcoholics and addicts, it is the perfect reason to drink of use.

So what if they call you every name in the book, attack your person, your family and everything that is meaningful to you. Why do you care? Why does their opinion matter? Why do you give your power away? Again I ask, so what?

There is a saying in the 12 step programs, that says that each time we are pointing one finger at someone else, three fingers are pointing back at us.

By refusing to engage, you are in a position of power. If you know the person, maybe it's time you remove the toxicity from your life. Maybe the toxic one is you? Many people thrive on negativity, which is all ego driven.

If you can accept that most of the crazy immature people you come across in life are acting in the only way they know how, that will help curtail your potential reaction. Additionally, we never really know what a person is going through in their life.

Sometime ago I heard a little story that helps to explain how we can never see things exactly as they are:

There was a man sitting on a bus with 2 small children under the age of 5. The man was staring blankly out the bus window, oblivious to his two small children that screamed at the top of their lungs while they ran up and down the aisle of the bus.

A woman sitting across from the man was fuming mad, and could not believe that this man would allow his children to run crazy all over the bus. As she scowled at him, she was thinking about how he was clearly the worst Father she had even seen, and was formulating in her mind how she would tell him off...

This man and his children had just come from the hospital, where 20 minutes earlier, his wife and the children's mother had died.

Let's take a breath today, stay in the moment, and not react.

Anger is an infantile response to any situation in life. It can be likened to a 2 year old with a temper tantrum. Even justified anger, is not really justified. It takes a great leap in spiritual awareness to move beyond anger, and this is almost impossible when one is firmly anchored in the "world". So, spiritual work and advancement is about learning how to live and not be so affected by the unpleasant things that go on around us day in and day out.

A good way to start to understand Anger, is to realize we are not usually angry at the person or situation for the reasons we think we are. Usually our anger is not because people are ungrateful, dishonest, rude, or demanding. It is usually because they are not being considerate, grateful, nice, or kind.

Since some people have only developed spiritually and humanly up to a certain point, it is much better for us to just see them as "limited". Some people come from a position of "survival", and as long as people are in survival mode, integrity, gratitude and kindness have to take a back seat.

Compassion is only possible when we understand that many lives are driven by fear, and this is the only way they know how to behave, and get her needs met.

Our anger is usually because we don't want what we have, and may not be able to accept the responsibility for making the original decision that put us in the situation with the person to begin with. Often times, my anger is really stemming from impatience at wanting something different - NOW.

In order to overcome anger, the best thing that can be done, is to surrender the situation, and anger to God. First, we clearly analyze the real reason for our anger, see that it is probably not the person or thing that we are angry at, but our own desire, craving and impatience for something different.

When we consider the situation from this perspective, we are no longer the victim. This was a decision I made, no one twisted my arm, is a grown up mature statement. And now this anger becomes nothing more than one of many life lessons.

As we practice clearly seeing whatever situation or person that makes us angry, own it, surrender it, and then move on, we will begin to experience peace and the anger will subside.

A big part of the 12 step recovery programs is learning how to let go of the judgement and grudges we have towards others. Some of us can hold grudges for decades, perhaps even our entire lives. This justified, or unjustified pride is a deterrent to letting go of resentments, so the first thing we have to do is to start developing some humility.

Until we can develop compassion, for all people and their plight as human beings, we will have a hard time letting go of resentments. Developing and having compassion and allowance for ourselves is crucial to being able to offer it to others. One of our favorite authors at newliferecovery.net writes that most people - believe it or not, are doing what they think to be their best at any given time. However, since we all see the world differently, and think our way is usually best, we tend to judge from that limited paradigm.

A good way to start developing compassion for others is to recognise that people are just doing what they consider to be the best for themselves and others at any given time. It may not be what we think is right, but that has to be beside the point. Today we try to look at things we typically judge, and exchange judgement with curiosity.

Do you know people in your life that are really just interested in talking about what is wrong? If everyone would just do and behave as they would like they would then be able to be happy. They are constantly disappointed by people, places and things. However, contrary to the world's general belief, true happiness and peace can only come from the inside out, not the outside in.

The 12 step programs are a great beginning for anyone searching for something more in their life. The 12 step programs speak the language of love. For 60 minutes you will not hear about what someone does for a living, what kind of car they drive, how much money they make or the stuff that the "world" seems consumed with.

The world can be extremely negative, and more people than are even aware are addicted to negativity, and victims of their own lives. When people embark on a spiritual recovery program, they experience what is called a "shift" in awareness, and things are never quite the same again. Thank God for that!

With this shift in awareness, comes a contemplative way of being in the world. Things move slower, because one is totally present in the moment. All of a sudden there is more time to be with people, and just enjoy life. People who have not experienced this type of awakening in awareness, will usually think these people are "slow", perhaps even stupid. The hardest part about having a spiritual awakening, and a shift in perception that accompanies recovery is that dealing with the world will become challenging, even difficult. Some people will walk away from high profile jobs, high income, extravegant lifestyles and close friends may think they have gone mad. They just no longer care about what they now view to be of no real importance. They now know that the journey is progressively within, and it is not out there. What a relief to finally really know that.

This does not mean that one cannot drive a Rolls Royce and enjoy abundance in life as a spiritually aware human being,in fact, these awake people understand what abundance really is but are no longer defined by it. The spiritually awakened individual is first and foremost grateful for all that they have an opportunity to enjoy, experiance and share. In fact, their circumstances usually improve greatly, once they can take it or leave it! Go figure? Life takes on new meaning.

Then there are types entirely normal in every respect except in the effect alcohol has upon them. They are often able, intelligent, friendly people.

All these, and many others, have one symptom in common: they cannot start drinking without developing the phenomenon of craving. This phenomenon, as we have suggested, may be the manifestation of an allergy which differentiates these people, and sets them apart as a distinct entity. It has never been, by any treatment with which we are familiar, permanently eradicated. The only relief we have to suggest is entire abstinence.

This immediately precipitates us into a seething caldron of debate. Much has been written pro and con, but among physicians, the general opinion seems to be that most chronic alcoholics are doomed.

What is the solution? Perhaps I can best answer this by relating one of my experiences. About one year prior to this experience a man was brought in to be treated for chronic alcoholism. He had but partially recovered from a gastric hemorrhage and seemed to be a case of pathological mental deterioration. He had lost everything worthwhile in life and was only living, one might say, to drink. He frankly admitted and believed that for him there was no hope. Following the elimination of alcohol, there was found to be no permanent brain injury. He accepted the plan outlined in this book (Big Book).

One year later he called to see me, and I experienced a very strange sensation. I knew the man by name, and partly recognized his features, but there all resemblance ended. From a trembling, despairing, nervous wreck, had emerged a man brimming over with self-reliance and contentment. I talked with him for some time, but was not able to bring myself to feel that I had known him before. To me he was a stranger, and so he left me. A long time has passed with no return to alcohol.

When I need a mental uplift, I often think of another case brought in by a physician prominent in New York. The patient had made his own diagnosis, and deciding his situation hopeless, had hidden in a deserted barn determined to die. He was rescued by a searching party, and, in desperate condition, brought to me. Following his physical rehabilitation, he had a talk with me in which he frankly stated he thought the treatment a waste of effort, unless I could assure him, which no one ever had, that in the future he would have the “will power’’ to resist the impulse to drink.

His alcoholic problem was so complex, and his depression so great, that we felt his only hope would be through what we then called “moral psychology,’’ and we doubted if even that would have any effect.

However, he did become “sold’’ on the ideas contained in this book. He has not had a drink for a great many years. I see him now and then and he is as fine a specimen of manhood as one could wish to meet.

I earnestly advise every alcoholic to read this book through, and though perhaps he came to scoff, he may remain to pray.

Many of us who are sober through the program of Alcoholics Anonymous would not miss the amazing wonderful experience of the fellowship in recovery even if there was another way. The obsession to drink has been removed, when other methods continually fail. Also, we lived in such isolation and loneliness prior to joining AA, we are now amazed that we ever lived without it, and consider our alcoholism a blessing to having lead us there. A great chapter to read for anyone who thinks that they may be alcoholic, but can not accept an AA or spiritual solution for recovery is Chapter 4 in the Big Book of Alcoholics Anonymous-"We Agnostics."
